FACE TO FACE BOOK

21st – 29th of October 2017
Pärnu, Estonia

Media is immensely influencing societies, culture and education in Europe. The influence is stronger than ever before, due to excess amount of media (including social media) and technology that is surrounding us. Young people are no exception as they deal with different technology and social media every day. Unfortunately, media opulence has made it difficult for young people to critically process all the information and behave accurately with technology and on social media. Misbehaviour on social media and with technology has lead to cyber-bullying, problems with privacy, self-value issues, hacking, identity theft, phishing scams, sexual assault through social media, sharing and copyright issues, health problems (amateur medical advice etc), mistreatment of personal information etc.
The influence of the media to young people should not be underestimated, on the contrary it must be dealt with. Young people are lacking critical thinking in terms of social media. Therefore, it is important to help them be media literate, so that they can protect themselves and manage their lives in the future. For this reason, young people and youth workers should acquire basic knowledge of media education, tools and activities to protect themselves and develop acceptable behaviour on social media and with technology.
